The Wedding Day

What made our wedding day so incredibly special was that no one knew it was happening. There were no outside opinions, distractions, expectations, or stress. For one beautiful day, the rest of the world seemed to fade away, and it was simply about the two of us and the love we share.

Our wedding day began around 10am, when we parted ways to get ready. There was something so exciting about those few hours apart, knowing that the next time we saw each other, we would be moments away from becoming husband and wife.

A few hours later, we reunited at the Fairmont for our first look. In the quiet of our stunning hotel room, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, we saw each other for the first time on our wedding day. It was intimate, emotional, and the perfect beginning to everything that followed.

From there, we made our way to the Allegheny County Courthouse for our grand staircase reservation from 1pm - 3pm ($50, if you’re curious).

Because we chose a self-uniting marriage license, there was no officiant and no traditional ceremony. It was just the two of us, with our photographers there to quietly capture it all.

Standing together on the grand staircase, we shared the vows we had written for one another. There were tears, plenty of smiles, and little moments of laughter in between. Without an audience or a schedule of traditions to follow, we were able to be completely present with each other.

When it came time to exchange our rings, we each spoke the same words: “I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and my promise to you, today and always.”

We slipped the rings onto each other’s fingers, sealed our promises with a kiss, and just like that, we were married.

Our photographers signed our marriage license as our two witnesses, making the people who had spent the day capturing our story a permanent little part of it, too.

There was no crowd waiting to cheer, no elaborate ceremony, and no one else who even knew what we had just done. And that was exactly what made it so perfect. It was simply us, choosing each other.

The rest of the afternoon was spent wandering around the city with our photographers, in and out of beautiful buildings we never knew existed.

Eventually, we made our way back to the Fairmont for a quick dress change before heading down to our favorite bar, Floor 2. Sitting together over cocktails, we couldn’t stop giggling about the fact that we were actually married and no one knew. Between sips, we started trying to answer the question we had been avoiding all day: How are we going to tell everyone?

But that was a problem for another day.

We ended the evening with an incredible dinner at Alla Famiglia, followed by one last nightcap at Floor 2. Then we headed back to our room to celebrate with Archie, ending our wedding day exactly the way we wanted: together, with our dog.

Just the two of us (and Archie), carrying around the happiest secret we’ve ever kept, and the beginning of forever.
